Is there a problem with my engine?

At the first indication of engine trouble, you'll want to further investigate. By promptly bringing your car to the shop for computerized diagnostics, you'll have a much better chance of addressing the problem before it worsens and becomes far more expensive to fix. At Phil and Son Auto Repair, our local mechanics can accurately diagnose engine trouble and then get to work on thoroughly repairing the problem.

The Check Engine Light

When the check engine light turns on, it doesn't automatically indicate that the engine is on the cusp of failure. But it's still smart to get to the shop for diagnostics so the issue can hopefully be nipped in the bud before it escalates and requires more complex repairs. Common issues that trigger the check engine light include faulty catalytic converters, mass airflow sensors, and oxygen sensors.

Common Symptoms of Engine Trouble

Abnormal sounds that come from your engine could mean a serious problem is looming. If you hear a tapping or knocking noise, then you may be driving with dangerously low oil, with the sound arising from inadequate lubrication. With extremely low oil, metal-on-metal contact could cause major damage to moving parts.

Power loss is a sign of significant trouble. It's not automatically concerning if an old car with a ton of miles has gradually lost a bit of power as it has aged. But an abrupt loss of a lot of power could mean that a major engine problem is brewing, such as worn-out pistons. Signs of overheating, such as smoking and a high reading on the temp gauge, also indicate that you're at risk of major engine trouble. It's important that your cooling system remains in excellent condition so that overheating doesn't lead to serious engine damage, such as a cracked block. Coolant leaks are a common source of overheating and should be addressed ASAP. You can also get hints about particular engine problems when you see discolored exhaust smoke. White smoke is a sign of an internal coolant leak. Blue-tinged smoke is symptomatic of an oil leak. Black smoke suggests that too much fuel is being burned.
